Epic Games Interview EVEREST VR Developer Sólfar Studios

The developer discusses some of the finer details of EVEREST VR. August 06, 2016 By Peter Graham

Earlier this week Sólfar Studios released its mountain climbing adventure experience EVEREST VR for the HTC Vive. The videogame has been created in Unreal Engine and Epic Games interviewed Thor Gunnarsson, co-founder and business development manager at the studio on the newly released title.Chance Ivey interviewed Gunnarsson at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2016 back in June, and the video has now been released. In describing the experience Gunnarson states it: “Basically allows you to experience what’s it’s like to summit Mt.Everest, in the first-person, in an interactive scene with AAA visuals and really beautiful scenery that looks near photo realistic.”Everest VR image 2He then goes on to explain: “EVEREST VR is not a technical climbing game, it’s not trying to accurately simulate exactly how it would be to hike or climb Mt.Everest, but what we really set out to do was to give you a kind of sense of some of the mechanics that climbers use as they’re getting up the mountain, some of the challenges they face, but more importantly really visually immerse you in the setting. So we really set out to create this triple A experience that I think a lot of people are going to be pretty shocked at how graphically rich a VR experience can be.”EVEREST VR guides players through several sequences while ascending Mt. Everest, including notable milestones and interactive events from Base Camp, the Khumbu Icefall, Hillary Step, Camp Four, and the ascent to Summit. The title also features a God Mode that allows users to take in the sweeping views of the Himalayas. The title is still available at a discounted rate on Steam until 9th August, where players can get a 10 percent discount. This drops the price from £18.99 GBP to £17.09. For all the latest VR news from Sólfar Studios and EVEREST VR, keep reading VRFocus.
